Mary Russell Mitford | Eminent Women

Mary Russell Mitford

Mary Russell Mitford was an English author and dramatist. Both a gifted and prolific writer, Mitford could write in a range of genres, from poetry to drama to prose. Her writing is marked by a spontaneous humor and quick wit.

Despite the success of her writing, her life was plagued with poverty--not of her own doing--but of her father’s. She once remarked, "I have not bought a bonnet, a cloak, a gown, hardly a pair of gloves, for four years.”

In 1842 when her father died, his heavy liabilities were met by a public subscription, which left a surplus that added to Mary’s narrow income. She continued writing until her death in 1855.

Mary Russell Mitford was listed among the eminent women in the records of the St. George Temple. To learn more about the painting by Michael Bedard in this video please click here.
