Maria Edgeworth | Eminent Women

Maria Edgeworth
Maria Edgeworth was a novelist and children’s writer of Anglo-Irish descent. Her writings were extremely popular and were often compared with her contemporary writers Jane Austen and Sir Walter Scott.

In her work An Essay on the Noble Science of Self Justification, written in 1795, she argued that the female sex is endowed with an art of self-justification and that women should use their gifts to continually challenge the force and power of men, especially their husbands, with wit and intelligence.

She was an active writer until her death and worked strenuously for the relief of the famine-stricken Irish peasants during the Irish Potato famine. (Source: Wikipedia)
