Jane Austen was a nineteenth century English novelist. Author of the books Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma, Jane Austen is one of the most accomplished and widely read authors of all-time.
When it comes to elevating women in literature, she is said to have surpassed William Shakespeare.
In her time, however, few people know her name, since it was considered unladylike for women to write novels. The title pages of her books credited her with “by A Lady” or “by The Author of Pride and Prejudice,” or similar phrases.
As with many great authors, Austen’s death preceded her renown. Although her novels were fashionable with prominent members of British society, including Princess Charlotte, the daughter of the Prince Regent, they were largely ignored by critics and opinion-makers. It wasn’t until the twentieth century that Austen’s novels began to attract serious attention. Since publication, there have been more than 200 literary adaptations of Austen’s works, as well as numerous film productions.
