Frances Sargent Osgood | Eminent Women

Frances Sargent Osgood was an American poet. She began publishing poetry at age fourteen and in later life wrote romantic poems to Edgar Allen Poe. Poe  wrote that her work was “absolutely without rival.” She was one of the most admired female poets during the mid-1840s.

In one of her poems, she wrote:

Come to me, angel of the weary hearted!
Since they my loved ones, breathed upon by thee,
Unto thy realms unreal have departed,
I too may rest--even I: ah! haste to me.

Before she died of tuberculosis in 1850 she had lost her ability to speak; but she could still write. On a slate she wrote the word “angel.” It was her last word before she died. (Source: Wikipedia, Bartleby)
